October 2017

Group run: Oaklands
Thursday 19th October, 18:30
Y Club
Liverpool Road
Manchester
M3 4JR
Route map preview for Group run: Oaklands

Meet at the Y Club reception at 6:30pm. We’ll do a warm-up in the Castlefield Arena and then head out on the “Oaklands” route. The full route is just under 8 miles; we have 5-mile and 5-kilometre route options available if you don’t fancy running quite that far!

We will head from the Y Club up through Salford Crescent and past the Salford University campus (the 5K route will loop back through the campus and head back to the Y Club at this point). We then zig-zag around the Irwell a bit to get to the start of Littleton Lane, which is where the full route and 5-mile routes split: the full route heads up Littleton Lane to Oaklands, up the hill and then along Moor Lane, Bury New Road and Great Cheetham Street West to Albert Park, while the 5-mile route cuts this bit out and heads down Cromwell Road to Albert Park to rejoin the full route. To get back to the Y Club from Albert Park, we go down Great Clowes Street/Blackfriars Road and then alongside Trinity Way and over onto Quay Street.

NO TRACK: Alternative speedwork session from the Y Club
Tuesday 24th October, 18:30
Y Club
Liverpool Road
Manchester
M3 4JR

Once again, Manchester City are playing at the Etihad, this time in the Carabao Cup versus Wolverhampton Wanderers (that's the Football League Cup in old money).

We'll do an alternative speedwork session from the Y Club instead, starting at the earlier time of 6:30pm.

Group run: Salford Quays
Thursday 26th October, 18:30
Y Club
Liverpool Road
Manchester
M3 4JR
Route map preview for Group run: Salford Quays

Meet at the Y Club reception at 6:30pm. After a warm-up in the Castlefield Arena, we’ll head out down Ordsall Lane to Salford Quays. The full route is pretty much exactly 10K; we have 5-mile and 5-kilometre route options available if you don’t want to run that far.

From the Y Club, we’ll head across Regent Road and down Ordsall Lane. We’ll then head over the Manchester Ship Canal and down Trafford Wharf Road to the Imperial War Museum, then over the bridge and through MediaCityUK. The route then takes us around Erie Basin and then past the Lowry Theatre and up the side of Ontario Basin, before making our way back over to Ordsall Lane and back to the Y Club to complete the 10K route.

The 5K route is a simple out-and-back, turning at the end of Ordsall Lane and then retracing your steps. The 5-mile route cuts across the bottom of Erie Basin rather than going around it.

Manchester Regional Athletics Arena
Rowsley Street
Sportcity
Manchester
M11 3FF
Route map preview for Track: #TaylorSwift (4 x 400m, 4 x 300m, 4 x 200m)

Nice of City to leave a Tuesday evening free, eh?

This speedwork session starts with 4 efforts of 400m at your “interval” pace (around your 5K pace) with 1 minute of standing recovery between each effort, followed by one lap of jog/walk for recovery. Then, it’s 4 efforts of 300m at a faster pace, with 45 seconds standing rest between each effort - do another jog/walk recovery lap of the track after these four efforts. Finally, it’s 4 efforts of 200m at your “repetition” pace, with 30 seconds standing rest between each effort.

If you think it will be too much for you, cut the number of efforts down to 3 per distance - or if you’re hardcore, you can increase it! This is one of Lauren Fleshman’s sessions: https://blog.strava.com/wow-the-taylorswift-9516/ - thanks to Sarah Brandon for suggesting it!

You can find calculate accurate values for your “repetition” and “interval” paces at http://runsmartproject.com/calculator/ .

We will start our “official” warm up at 7:00pm (though feel free to do a few easy laps if you’re a bit early); we will do a couple of easy laps of the track to warm up and then some dynamic stretches starting at 7:10pm. We’ll then get the main session started for 7:20pm. After the main session, we will do a couple of easy laps to cool down and then some static stretching. If you’ve got any favourite dynamic or static stretches, or any ideas for future sessions, don’t be shy about sharing them with the group - we’re always keen to try something new!

We will start our “official” warm up at 7:00pm (though feel free to do a few easy laps if you’re a bit early); we will do a couple of easy laps of the track to warm up and then some dynamic stretches starting at 7:10pm. A nice "easy" one to ease you into the festive period...!

This speedwork session starts with 1 mile (4 laps) slightly slower than “interval” pace (around your 10K pace), followed by one lap of jog/walk for recovery. Then, it’s 4 sets of 200m at your “repetition” pace, with 30 seconds standing rest between each effort - do another jog/walk recovery lap of the track after these four efforts. Then, do another mile, at “interval” pace this time (around your 5K pace, so slightly faster than the first mile) - again, follow with a jog/walk recovery lap. Finally, you’re back on 4 sets of 200m at your “repetition” pace, with 30 seconds standing rest between each effort.

If you think it will be too much for you, cut the miles down to 1000m (2.5 laps) - it is a bit of a killer session! (You can thank Sarah Crandon for suggesting it!) The inspiration for the session comes from Lauren Fleshman at https://blog.strava.com/wow-the-freddykruger-9769/
